Morinville – With more than 100 years of quilting experience between the seven members of the Scrap Happy Quilters at their disposal, the group have used their skills to create another 19 quilts for donation. Seventeen of the quilts measure 60 inches by 70 inches; the remaining three are baby quilts. The 19 quilts, which took the quilters 10 months to complete, will be donated to Win House, an ongoing project of the Edmonton Women’s Shelter.
Nothing is wasted when the Scrap Happy Quilters work. “Every piece of fabric is put to good use,” said member Renne Knight. The Quilters buy the backing and batting for the quilts and are always looking for new patterns and ideas.
The group has recently been working on a bird quilt from bird themed pictures made and donated to the Scrap Happy Quilters by Cecilia Chevalier. Knight said the group squared the images off, sashed them to give them a framing effect, and then sewed a border around it. This quilt will be donated to an organization that can use it for a fundraiser in the form of a raffle or auction with the proceeds to go towards a charity.
Last year the members of the Scrap Happy Quilters: Vivian Rousseau, Lorraine Carlson, Madelain Scantland, Mary Quaghebeur, Blenda Pattison, Helen Ihle and Renee Knight made and donated 15 large quilts to the Mustard Seed in Edmonton, a not-for-profit organization that helps meet the basic needs of shelter, food and clothing for people experiencing poverty.
