Jets cooking up annual fundraiser

Morinville – The Morinville Jets will be kicking off the skates for their annual dinner, dance and silent auction fundraiser next weekend at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre. The event takes place Oct. 12 with cocktails at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. and live band Boneyard playing the fundraising dance at 8:30 p.m.

Morinville Jets President Brent Melville said the event is another thing the Junior B hockey club does each year to help the team survive financially. “We’re planning to make the provincials this year which will probably cost us $10,000 to $12,000 to take a team to Wainright,” he said of the club’s aspirations and costs this year. “Part of this event will hopefully pay for that.”

Melville said the team only has a casino every two years; their last was held this past April. It costs about $60,000 per year to run the Jets. The president said the team has enjoyed great corporate sponsorship and support from businesses in the region, and that ticket sales also help support the costs of running the team each year.

He and the team are hoping fans and supporters will come out to the fundraising evening next weekend. “We’ve got a good band. We’ve got good food,” Melville said. “It will be fun.”

Tickets to the event are $50 each or $350 for a table of eight. They are available from individual members of the team or from Brent Melville at 780-699-2903.
