Pedestrian safety RCMP focus for November

31 October 2012 No Comment

are conducting themselves in a way that supports pedestrian safety.

With the changing weather and reduced number of daylight hours RCMP concerns for pedestrian safety increases, but the detachment points out that safety is the responsibility of both drivers and pedestrians.

Pedestrians have the right of way in crosswalks, but pedestrians also have the responsibility to cross safely. Provincial statistics show more than 40 pedestrians were killed each year between 2005 and 2009. Another 1,250 were injured during that time.

Failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk carries a fine of $575 plus four demerit points.

Questions about pedestrian safety can be directed to the Morinville RCMP at 780-939-4520 or residents can obtain additional information on the Saferoads – Traffic Safety in Alberta website at www.saferoads.com/drivers/tips_pedsafety.html.
