Food, games and music collide at family dance

By Morinville News Staff

Morinville – Organizers of this Saturday night’s licensed family dance at the cultural centre are looking forward to seeing the facility packed with families out for some good food, good music and good fun. The event is part of Morinville’s Family Day weekend Snowman Festival and takes place Feb. 16 from 5 p.m. to midnight.

Morinville Festival Society Chair Paul Smith said it is an affordable night out for the entire family. “When we’ve talked to residents about what they wanted to see more of during festivals, the loud and clear answer was more stuff for families to do,” Smith said. “So we’ve booked a great caterer, booked a great band, threw in some cool kid’s activities and put it in the coolest facility we’ve got.”

Smith said tickets for the evening event are $20 for adults, $10 for those 13 and under and $50 for a family of four. “For $50 an entire family can go out, have a great meal catered by Chef Doug Adsit from the Green Bean and dance together to the music of the Chris Durand Band,” Smith said, adding the committee and Town of Morinville wanted the event to be affordable.

While organizers are excited about the evening’s meal, they are also pleased to be having Durand and his band take to the stage. “Chris Durand is so good because he is a professionally-known musician that is local, working with other local musicians,” Smith said. “They play Top 40 and all the classics in a bluesy style that will get everyone dancing.”

Durand has been playing guitar since the age of 12. His first band, Violet Archer, was started in Morinville in the 1980s. Over the past three decades, Durand has tackled everything from rock to country, and has worked on numerous recording projects in Alberta and British Columbia..

In addition to Durand’s music and Adsit’s meal, there will be children’s games and activities at the back of the hall to add tot he family–friendly event.

Tickets for Saturday night’s event are available at Smith Music, The Green Bean, Noah’s Ark Pets and Supplies and the Morinville Community Cultural Centre.
