Morinville – Royal Canadian Legion Alberta – N.W.T. Command Deputy District 8 Commander Wayne Willis was presented the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal by Westlock-St. Paul Member of Parliament Brian Storseth in Morinville Council Chambers Mar. 12.

Willis was recognized for his dedication to country and community, not only through his past military service but also his work with the Royal Canadian Legion and the community in general.

“Wayne was nominated by several people for different aspects of his volunteer time,” Storseth said. “It’s very impressive.”

Storseth has been handing out several of the prestigious medals of late and is amazed at the stories behind them. “The different places Wayne has been in in service to our country. The ways in which he has continued to serve his community and our region in Alberta through the Legion and other volunteer service mechanisms,” Storseth said. ““It’s people who have actually contributed and been recognized by other members of their community as key contributors.”

Willis was surprised and honoured to receive the medal, which takes precedence over other medals due to its being presented on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II. “It was very much a surprise to be nominated, and then to actually receive it,” Willis said, adding he was honoured by the multiple nominations. “I was very pleased that they recognized me and nominated me. It’ll be a great honour to wear this alongside the rest of my medals, and I’ll do so proudly.”

He is the third Morinville resident to receive the medal recently. Lil and Ron Cust each received the medal for their respective volunteer work in and out of the community.
