Morinville – The Morinville Road Runners program has gone from strength to strength in recent years, growing from a handful of basketball players to more than 100 players this past season. Along the road, the Road Runners’ Midget Girls have accumulated three consecutive City and Provincial Championships and won more than 60 consecutive games.

Champion Petfoods announced Wednesday they would be joining the team in its efforts by making a $12,000 investment in the program. As the league continues to expand, the $12,000 investment from Champion will help cover the costs for new uniforms, equipment, coach training, and gymnasium rentals.

“We’re committed to supporting Morinville families,” said Champion Petfoods President and CEO, Frank Burdzy in a release Wednesday. “Our 250 teammates at Champion are proud to support Canada’s future basketball stars and to call Morinville home. It’s a perfect match.”

Road Runners founder Serge Froment, who along with wife Stacey received the Lions Citizen of the Yer Award Apr. 26 for their work with youth sports, was thrilled with the partnership. “This support is phenomenal,” Froment said. “This funding gives our boys and girls a chance to succeed on and off the court.”

The basketball program, in addition to making strong players on the court, also assigns homework to players to make them supportive of their family and their community.

Although the basketball program will maintain and enhance its efforts on and off the court, it will do so under a new look next season. Just what that fresh new look will be is to be released this summer.
