Morinville one of 66 communities spotlighted during Alberta Culture Days

Morinville – The arts and arts community will be in the spotlight during Alberta Culture Days Sept. 27 to 29. The Town announced Aug. 21 its partnership with the Morinville Historical Society resulted in the society being chosen as one of 66 organizations in the province to receive a Celebration Site Grant and to serve as an official celebration sites for Alberta Culture Days.

“We are delighted and proud that the Province has designated Morinville as a host site for this celebration,” said Deputy Mayor Lisa Holmes in an Aug. 21 press release. “This will be an exciting weekend for residents of Morinville and the region.”

That weekend will include several arts and culture events. The Annual Sturgeon Hospital Foundation Fundraising Gala and Art Exhibit will take place Sept. 27 at the Morinville Community cultural Centre, and will be followed with a performance by veteran Alberta musician Tommy Banks in what will be the first concert of the 2013/2014-performance season. Other professional musicians will join Banks in putting on free workshops to musicians and the general public prior to the concert. Also taking place on Saturday will be an Artist Trading Card Workshop will be held Saturday afternoon, offering a chance to create, swap and collect miniature works of art made by participants. Sunday’s activities include television personality and children’s performer Fred Penner, who will perform at 11 a.m. The Morinville Community Cultural Centre will host Morinville OnStage in the afternoon, an open stage where residents and community groups can perform in front of the community. Special programming will be offered throughout the weekend at the Morinville Community Library and Musee Morinville Museum.

“This will be a wonderful community celebration, and I’m so excited that with the support of the province we can offer opportunities for Morinville residents and the region to showcase, experience and participate in arts & cultural activities,” said Laurie Stalker, Morinville’s Cultural Services Manager in the release.

Specific details on the full slate of Alberta Culture Days activities will be published over the next few weeks.
