The Morinville Youth Basketball Association, who have run under the name the Morinville Road Runners for the past eight years, will take to the courts this season as the Morinville Orijen Sabretooths. The new name reflects the $12,000 sponsorship the Morinville Youth Basketball Association received from Champion Petfoods, the maker of Orijen bran pet foods, gave to the association earlier this year.

Coach Serge Froment said the money would go a long way to continue the expansion of the program. Over the last eight years the program has grown to 100 players and eight teams. One of those teams won three consecutive city and provincial championships.

“I’m excited to give the kids kind of a fresh start and a new look,” Froment said. “We’ll soon unveil the logo of our Sabretooth tiger.” Froment said the new logo and mascot would be on jerseys when the Sabretooths start their season next month.

The association is now accepting registrations for the season. Anyone interested can learn more about what the league has to offer by visiting www.morinvilleyouthbasketball.com.
