The Town of Morinville’s Recreation Programs received two ChooseWell Awards at Festival Place in Fort Saskatchewan Friday night. The Town won the Health Education & Promotion Award, which recognizes efforts family wellness and getting active together as well as the promotion of workplace wellness, and the Overall High Achiever Award, presented for overall programming, concepts, marketing, and use of creative new initiatives. The latter award provides a $2,000 contribution to future recreational ChooseWell initiatives.

Morinville has been incorporating healthy eating components into its recreational programs along with promoting a healthy lifestyle in the work place for a few years and previously won two ChooseWell awards in the fall of 2011.
“It has been exciting to see our initiatives making a difference, and this is due to the dedication and vision of the programing staff,” said Morinville’s Community Program Coordinator Melonie Dziwenka in a release. “We are already planning for next year to expand our input/output program. We want to further extend our education component to include the families of active children. The goal is to encourage them to incorporate healthy choices as a whole family, whether it the quick meal on the way to a game/practice or the snacks for the siblings who are there to watch.”

The ChooseWell program was established in 2005 and is backed by Alberta Health and Alberta Recreation and Parks. Morinville is one of 191 communities taking part in the provincial movement.
