Notre Dame Physical Education teacher Tina McKinnon demonstrates Nerf archery; a new element added to the school’s Mission Impossible games this year. It is believed the indoor archery adds excitement and is in keeping with the archery competition to be held in the upcoming 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Morinville – In its fourth year, Ecole Notre Dame Elementary School’s Mission Impossible Games are being held this week in the school gym with all classes participating. Notre Dame Physical Education teacher Tina McKinnon said Mission Impossible is “a fun unit to teach agility, fair play, strengths, balance and there is strategy involved.” Students make use of their muscles, legs, stomach, flexibility and balancing as they make their rounds through the five stations in a format similar to an obstacle course. The goal is for students to demonstrate positive acceptance of their abilities and limitations as well as those of their teammate. Additional goals include motivation to participate and attempt activities with a positive attitude, build self-esteem and raise the level of physical fitness.
Students are encouraged to complete the five stages in a show of good sportsmanship through their actions and positive teamwork. They are encouraged to recognize the many attributes that individuals with differences can bring to a group activity and respect for different backgrounds and the use of equipment and space safely and properly. They are also taught to respond positively if they have a rule infraction. Infractions included not returning the equipment to the start, not fixing anything they knocked down or moved, running and talking.
On Tuesday Notre Dame student Anson LeBlanc was performing one of the activities part of the Mission Impossible Week.
