Motor vehicle collision claims life on Highway 28

Sturgeon County – A man is dead following a collision on Highway 28 early Friday morning that closed the highway for some time while debris was cleared and the matter was investigated. Morinville RCMP and emergency services were called to a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 28 and the intersection of Township Road 554 at approximately 2:30 a.m. Friday morning.

Upon arrival, RCMP learned the lone occupant of a pickup truck travelling eastbound on Township Road 554 was approaching the intersection with Highway 28. The eastbound pickup did not stop before entering the intersection and was struck by a southbound pickup that was unable to stop.

The male driver of the eastbound pickup truck succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the southbound pickup truck, and his passengers, were treated at the scene for minor injuries and released.

The identity of the deceased is not being released at this time at the request of the family. Morinville County Victim Services is providing assistance to family and friends.

Alcohol is not considered to be a factor in the incident. Road conditions at the time were slippery with icy sections. Morinville RCMP Traffic Services along with an RCMP Collision Analyst continue to investigate.

RCMP say an update will be provided when new information becomes available.
