Dedicated Lion
Morinville Lions Club President Colleen Turner presented Lion Lou Newell with the 35-Year Monarch Chevron Award Jan. 20. The medal commemorates his completion of 35 years service as a Lion. Turner made the presentation on behalf of International Lions President Barry Palmer. Lion Jim Turner is also a recipient of his 15-Year Chevron Award.

Baking for a cause
Miss. Keogh’s Morinville Public Elementary School Grade 1 class held a bake sale to raise money for SCARS( Second Chance Animal Rescue) Jan. 22. The students became interested in this project when a student brought his SCARS dog into class for show and share. Since then the project has taken off with a parent presentation, letter written by the students to ask for permission to hold the bake sale, intercom announcements, and student made posters. The students sold cookies, tarts and other baked goods for .25 an item. The initiative resulted in $224.10 being raised for SCARS, monies that will be sent as soon as the cheque is cut.

Front lawn surprise
Lots of honking was going on outside a Morinville home Thursday. Bonnie Dubois woke up to 50 buzzards planted on her front lawn in honour of her birthday. The buzzards were accompanied by a sign that read – “Everybody honk, it’s my birthday.”

Saturday
They were shredding
Susan Smok, H & R Block Tax Professional Theresa MacDonald and Lorne Rosentreter from Iron Mountain Secure Shredding Services get ready to dump some materials at the BYOB Shredding event at H&R Block Saturday. There were already five people ready with their boxes at opening. Watching a brief PowerPoint presentation on protecting your privacy and what documents to shred and when was the only condition of the free shredding service.

A fishing they did go
Morinville and Area Young Naturalist Club (YNC) members Rory Flynn, Jennifer Flynn, Andrew Boissonnault, Leader Leanne Boissonnault and Ethan Boissonnault gathered at Heritage Lake Saturday afternoon for ice fishing. The YNC was formed last September and the group has registered as well as drop-in members. The group, designed for youth and families who like to have fun learning about nature, has been active since that time with a variety of activities. The naturalists were joined by the Girl Guides for Saturday’s fishing outing.
