RCMP looking for women

by Morinville News Staff

Edmonton – The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) will be holding a Women in Policing event Feb. 11 as part of their efforts to recruit more women to a career in law enforcement. The two-hour evening event features female police officers from different sections within the RCMP; recruiters will conduct a presentation on policing and female police officers will share their career experiences and stories. The evening will also include an introduction to the RCMP’s Physical Ability Requirement Evaluation (PARE).

One of those officers who has a story to tell is Constable Josée Smith, a 22-year RCMP member currently with the Edmonton Recruiting unit. “I have had the opportunity to experience different jobs in my career and I have enjoyed the challenges and rewards that each one has brought,” she said in a release Monday.

RCMP statistics show that approximately 20 per cent of the RCMP’s 19,258 Regular Members are women. In late 2012 the RCMP committed to conducting a gender-based assessment to learn why there were not more females among Regular Members, senior management and the executive cadre. Though the RCMP have found an 8 per cent increase in female enrollment and a 4 per cent increase in graduation from Depot over the past five years, the RCMP Commissioner has established a benchmark of 35 per cent female representation in the force.

Those interested in a career the RCMP believe “offers the chance to have a daily positive impact on Canadian communities while enjoying vast opportunities for growth and development in dozens of specialized units” can attend the Women in Policing event Feb. 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Edmonton RCMP Headquarters (11140 109 Street, Edmonton). Interested parties are asked to phone 1-877-726-7472 to register.
