CRB committee selects chair

Edmonton – Beaumont Mayor Camille Berube was elected to a two-year term as Chair of the Capital Region Board’s (CRB) Governance, Priorities and Finance Committee Monday in a secret ballot at the Committee’s inaugural meeting Monday. Councillor Phyllis Kobasiuk of Parkland County was elected as Vice Chair at the same meeting. The CRB represents 24 municipalities in Alberta’s Capital Region, including Morinville and Sturgeon County.

St. Albert Mayor and CRB Chair Nolan Crouse said Mayor Berube has been a great supporter of the region since the CRB’s inception in 2008. “The CRB is embarking on a critical phase of our mandate,” Crouse said in a release Monday. “We look forward to Mayor Berube’s experienced leadership in guiding the fundamental work that falls to the Governance, Priorities and Finance committee in implementing the CRB vision.”

Berube’s committee will provide the CRB with strategic advice by consulting with CRB members, building on regional research and leveraging expertise from the CRB’s administration.

The Beumont mayor said he is looking forward to the committee’s work. “I’ve been proud to be a part of what the Capital Region Board has accomplished over the last five years, so I am thrilled to have this opportunity to help the board continue to move closer to achieving its goal of bringing prosperity to the Capital Region,” he said in the same release. “An important focus will be the Growth Plan Update.”

The province approved the CRB’s growth plan, Growing Forward, in March 2010. The document encourages member municipalities establishing regional partnerships in the CRB’s key priority growth areas. The goal of the Groth Plan update according to the CRB’s website is to “build on our past successes and to create one plan for the Region rather than a plan that affects 24 municipalities.”

The CRB’s Governance, Priorities and Finance Committee, one of several new committees struck by the CRB this year, is responsible for business and budget planning, monitoring and audit, policy advice, intergovernmental relations and advocacy, regional awareness and relationships, and communications.
