Sturgeon mourns passing of beloved educator
It is with great sadness that Sturgeon School Division says farewell to a beloved student, teacher and senior administrator, Gerry Schick, who passed away on Wednesday, February 12, 2014.
Gerry began as a student in the Division and, for the past 44 years, has filled many significant positions, supporting Sturgeon’s young people with heartfelt dedication and enthusiasm. During his career, Gerry was an outstanding advocate for teacher professional development and also a founding member of The Young Scientist Conference, promoting youth in the sciences. A life-long learner, himself, with a true passion for education and helping student realize their potential, Gerry was a wonderful example of leadership to our youth and staff members. He will be dearly missed.
Morinville Public Elementary School student Isaak Giguere was learning how to twirl taffy on a wooden stick at the ACFA Centralta sugar shack set up at the school Thursday. All students had an opportunity to taste and experience an old French traditional treat.
MCHS student Jackie Simonneau was taking aim at her target Wednesday at the MCHS Student Olympic Challenge. Events included country door decorating, flag challenge, human curling, towel speed skating, Nerf gun biathlon and others. Closing ceremonies and medal presentations were held at the school’s Pep Rally Friday.
Cheerleading with Kennedy Knight was one of the presentations at the Notre Dame School’s first Celebrating Talent Assembly held Wednesday with performers from Grade 4. The event will be held monthly. Students must pass an audition. March will feature the Grade 3 students with auditions beginning in the first week.
All the kindness you can bear
MPES students recently collected teddy bears and wrote letters to go with the bears to partcipate in Random Act of Kindness Week.
Grade 1 students collected the bears and Grade 3 students went throughout the community giving them away Friday. The students each had stories to tell of their encounters with people and their reactions to the gift.
Students will also be donating bears to fire and ambulance workers. Another 137 bears will be used to make literacy kits for the library.
