Morinville – More than 800 pancakes were served Tuesday at École Notre Dame Elementary School to 485 students and staff waiting to participate in the Annual Shrove Tuesday Breakfast. Many volunteers were on hand to lend a hand. Grade 3 students helped serve pancakes and juice as part of their Service Project towards Development and Peace.
Pancakes were also on the agenda for Georges H. Primeau and MCHS.
Shrove Tuesday is observed by many Christian denominations, including Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans and Methodists. It is the final day prior to Lent and is a time when many Christian faithful undergo self-examination on wrongs they may wish to repent.
Like Easter, Shrove Tuesday is a moveable feast in that it occurs on a different day each year, determined by the date of Easter, which falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox or first day of spring. The unusual calculation is because Easter was originally connected with the Jewish feast of Passover. Jewish feasts are moveable because the calendar is a lunar rather than a solar calendar.
