Edmonton – Police report there were four traffic fatalities over the Victoria Day long weekend. These fatalities occurred in the Two Hills, Picture Butte, Vulcan and Westlock policing areas.

The Westlock collision occurred a kilometer south of town on Highway 44. Police there say a northbound Jeep entered into the southbound travel lane and collided head on with a tractor and trailer. The driver and sole occupant, a man from British Columbia, was pronounced dead at the scene. The lone semi tractor driver was examined by emergency responders on scene and confirmed uninjured by the incident. That investigation is ongoing but police do not suspect impairment to have been a factor.

Weekend traffic fatalities were down from the Victoria Day holiday period in 2013, a long weekend that saw seven fatal collisions that resulted in eight deaths in the province.

Over the May long weekend Alberta’s Integrated Traffic Services conducted a number of traffic enforcement projects along Alberta Highways. These projects resulted in 5,703 total charges, the majority of which were speeding tickets.

In addition to the speeding tickets, Integrated Traffic Services patrolling the province’s roadways over the weekend issued 11 impaired driving charges and 13 driving suspensions.
