Edmonton – The RCMP are looking to increase the number of Aboriginal members in their ranks to better represent the communities they police across the country. In 2013, 7.9 per cent of RCMP officers self identified as Aboriginal. They are looking to increase that number to 10 per cent or better, and will be holding an Aboriginal career presentation on May 28 at 6 p.m. at K Division Headquarters (11140 109th Street, Edmonton).

During the Aboriginal Career Presentation, participants will learn about some of the more than 150 different types of policing opportunities within the RCMP and hear from Aboriginal police officers. A Recruiting Officer will also outline the recruiting process step-by-step, provide advice and answer questions.

Although the upcoming presentation is for Aboriginal people, the RCMP is looking for more members to serve at the RCMP’s 750 detachments across the country.

To join the RCMP one must be a Canadian citizen; 19 years or older (may begin the application process at 18); of good character; proficient in English or French; and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Applicants must be willing to relocate anywhere in Canada, have a valid driver’s licence, meet medical/psychological/vision standards and be physically fit.
