Morinville – A home and garage in the Sunshine Lake neighbourhood was destroyed by fire Wednesday night. The Morinville Fire Department responded to a call of an Explosion at a single residence located at 8703 104 Avenue around 9:35 p.m. May 28.
“We got a report of an explosion involving vehicles inside a garage at this location,” said Morinville Fire Chief Brad Boddez, adding when his crews arrived there was significant smoke coming from the residence. “The fire was fully involved on arrival. We attacked the fire hard with attack teams from the outside and with our ladder truck as well and brought the fire under control.”
Chief Boddez said search and rescue is the department’s first priority when arriving on scene. On arrival Boddez’ crew received word the family was out of the affected house. “The first priority is the house that’s involved for search and rescue for our personnel,” the Chief said. “Then immediately we look at exposures on the east and west side. Again, search and rescue to make sure people are out of that building.”
The Department was fortunate in Wednesday night’s fire that wind conditions were favourable for firefighters and the neighbourhood. “The house to the east wasn’t affected at all. The house to the west has a little bit of melting on the siding. We had a line on that right away cooling and protecting that exposure.”
As with many fires, the Morinville Fire Department used Ladder 4, the department’s aerial truck, a fire unit capable of putting out 7,000 litres of water per minute to combat fires from above. “With the master stream appliance, you have copious amounts of water and can extinguish a blaze and bring it under control fairly quickly.”
Chief Boddez said the cause of Wednesday night’s fire is not known at this time.

I’m really hoping that you meant the smoke was coming from the “residence” and not the “residents” as the article says. Hopefully that was just an oversight by the editor? Kudos to the Morinville Fire Department for their timely and effective response to the call!
