Police Briefs: Grain theft in the county

county story

by Morinville News Staff

Sometime between 2 p.m. May 20 and 10 a.m. May 21 an unknown person or persons took 600 bushels of Canola from a farm located on Township Road 245 in Sturgeon County. The Canola was loaded into a truck using the farm’s grain auger, already under the bin. The complainant noticed a suspicious tandem axle grain truck in the area during the same time frame. The complainant advised police that the driver looked nervous and rather young.

Constable Dalton Rouse of the Morinville RCMP Detachment added the person who committed this crime was likely familiar with farm operations, equipment and possessed a truck that would blend in to the area. He also notes the suspect would have been observing his target farm as he would have known the farmer was leaving his farm and would have known that it was safe to load the grain.

RCMP are appealing to the public for tips, leads and assistance. Police say summer time is a common time for an increase in property crimes and are asking people to take extra measures to secure cars, barns, homes and other valuables.

If anyone has information about the noted file please contact Cst. Rouse as 780-939-4550.
