Morinville will acknowledge the contribution of French Canadians to the province and community Mar. 6 with a day-long French Canadian Heritage Celebration.

“It is vital that communities recognize and celebrate their heritage and cultures,” said Allen Jacobson, Community Development Coordinator in a release on the event. “This event is one of several the town organizes every year.”

The event will begin with the Raising of the Franco Albertan flag at 12:30 p.m. at Morinville’s St. Germain Place (Town Hall). Festivities will continue at the cultural centre in the afternoon and evening.

The celebrations include activities for all ages: presentations and heritage and historical displays, music, children’s activities, drinks and food, including tortiere and soupe aus pois.

The main event takes place Friday night. Doors open at 6 p.m. and will be followed by a French buffet.

Canadian Grand Master Fiddle Champion Daniel Gervais, a young, dynamic proponent of traditional and modern fiddle styles, and his band will provide the evening’s entertainment running from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The artwork of Gabrielle Bujold will also be on display in the Morinville Community Cultural Centre from Mar. 6 to 20. Gabrielle is an Alberta artist whose collection of original paintings “Heritage” depicts the humble beginnings of French Farm communities.
