Two Morinville businesses were finalists in the Alberta Business Awards of Distinction held in Edmonton Friday night. Champion Petfoods was a finalist in the Alberta Business Awards of Distinction in the Marketing Category, and Smith Music was a finalist in the 2015 Employer of Youth Distinction. Though neither company received the award in their respective category, both were eligible for the Premier’s Award of Distinction, the top award given that night. Champion Petfoods was not only the finalist for the coveted award; they were also the recipient.

Both local businesses were subsequently recognized by The Honourable Maureen Kubinec, Minister of Culture and Tourism and Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock MLA, according to a Town of Morinville social media post on Saturday morning.

But the Town was not the only one’s boasting of the win. Councillor Brennan Fitzgerald made a late-night post on Facebook expressing his pleasure at the win. “Excellent (and long) night celebrating, with many friends, the success of Champion Petfoods and Paul Smith Music,” the Councillor wrote. “Both companies are very deserving of the recognition they received and they serve as testaments to the quality and strength of the Morinville business community.”

It is another year of awards for the local manufacturer. Champion Petfoods took the Alberta Chambers of Commerce Award of Distinction in the Export Category in 2014 as well as The Alberta Export Awards’ Agricultural and Consumer Products division award.

Smith Music has also been among the nominees at other awards recently. The business took medium-sized business of the year at the Morinville and District Chamber of Commerce Awards last October.

Both businesses have seen expansion over the past year – Smith Music in the variety of services it is offering its clients, and Champion Petfoods with the announcement and commencement of their third plant, and the start of a research and development facility in Morinville.
