Morinville and Legal celebrate Francophone heritage

by Lucie Roy

The Franco-Albertan Flag raising ceremony was held in Legal Mar. 5. Mayor Ken Baril, ACFA members, students, teachers, staff and residents attended the event.

Activities included speeches from Mayor Ken Baril, ACFA Centralta Director Cathy Pellerin, and Ecole Citadelle Principal Lisa Magera, as well as a number of French songs and a cake cutting. Legal students also placed letters in a mail box to be sent to students at Ecole Allain St-Cyr in Yellowknife.

Morinville held their celebrations Mar. 6 with the raising of the Franco-Albertan flag at Town Hall over the lunch hour, an afternoon performance of French songs, skits and dance at the cultural centre, and an evening celebration of French heritage for the entire community. The evening event included an art exhibit, historical displays, a French buffet by the green bean and a performance by Daniel Gervais, the first and only Albertan to win the title of Canadian Grand Master Fiddle Champion.

The event was held on the kickoff of Les Rendez-Vous de la Francophonie (RVF), which runs Mar. 6 to 22. The RVF is part of the events surrounding the International Day de la Francophonie Mar. 20, which is organized around the world to promote the French language.
