Sturgeon County’s Brooke Froment joins Team Alberta

Thirteen-year-old Sturgeon County resident Brooke Froment is looking forward to a summer of basketball with Team Alberta’s U-14 team. The former Orijen Sabretooth and current MCHS Wolves team member was recently selected to represent Alberta in four competitions taking place this summer. Sixty girls tried out for twelve spots over three sessions, one in Calgary and two in Edmonton.

“Tryouts were really fun,” Froment said. “There was lots of competition. A lot of the girls, I knew from playing with them on other teams I play with.”

Now selected to play, Froment joins two players from Sherwood Park, four from St. Albert, three from Calgary, one from Edmonton, and one from Raymond in making up the 12-player team.

BrookeFroment2AThe Grade 8 student is excited about the opportunity. “It’s the best feeling of my whole entire life,” Froment said. “All the hard work has paid off. It wasn’t really work to me because I love it [basketball] so much. I’ve had a lot of support coming from a lot of people — parents, teammates, friends. Everyone around me has been really supportive.”
With the team selected and solidified, practices will commence in the Edmonton and Calgary areas before the team takes part in four tournaments this summer, one of which is in Las Vegas. Players on Team Alberta are now in their spring leagues. As such, Team Alberta coaches will work around the players’ league schedules.

Past coach and father Serge Froment said his daughter is up to the task ahead of her on the court this summer.
“I’ve coached a hundred kids, and I know I’m completely biased in saying this, but there is no one that loves to play as much as her,” he said. “The amount of extra practice time she has put in is amazing. We’ve been going to practice Sundays at MCHS for the last two years — just about every Sunday. She loves to shoot. She loves to practice. She wants to know the next best drill, the next best move. There’s never a question.”

Froment said Brooke’s enthusiasm and love of the game had transferred to her younger sister.

The 13-year-old player has been practicing with the MCHS Wolves Senior Girls team this year and has not missed a single practice. “She practices with her Grade 9 team from 5 to 7 and then practices with us from 7 to 9,” Serge Froment said. “It’s not unusual for her to put four or five hours in a day in or off season.

Team Alberta will take part in one tournament in Calgary and two in Edmonton before the big tournament in Las Vegas July 15 to 20. The latter event brings together 300 North American schools.
