Fire ban issued for Morinville

by Morinville news Staff

Prolonged dry weather, combined with warm weather and windy conditions prompted the Town of Morinville to issue a fire ban Thursday afternoon.

The ban prohibits burning activities, including open burning, backyard fire pits, solid fuel cooking stoves, and fireworks within the Town of Morinville. Despite the ban, propane gas barbecues are still permitted to be used.

The fire danger rating for Northern Alberta moved into the “extreme category” Wednesday, which is calculated using the Fire Weather Index. This index takes into consideration temperature, wind conditions, humidity and fuel (ground cover) moisture levels.

Anyone who breaks the ban could be subject to fines or charges if any activity causes a safety issue or fire, including covering costs of emergency services.

The ban will remain in effect until further notice.
