Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools hosted an outdoor mass to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Catholic Education in the region Thursday. Organizers say the Mass on the Hill, which took place on the hill behind École Father Jan School is one of the grand finale events in a yearlong celebration of faith-based education. The milestone celebration also honoured the Grey Nuns, who opened the first school building in the region on Sept. 19, 1864.

“Our Mass on the Hill is an opportunity for us to recognize our rich history, to give thanks to God for the blessings we have received, and to celebrate the strength of our community” said David Keohane, Superintendent, in a release issued prior to the event. “It also provides an opportunity for our students to experience the richness of their faith and to learn about the historical significance of the area.”

Staff and students from across the school district attended along with parents, community members and special guests. More than 6,000 people were expected to attend. Archbishop Richard Smith of the Archdiocese of Edmonton and Parish priests from St. Albert, Morinville, and Legal, as well as some Oblate priests who have served within the community over the years attended.

Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools will hold a 150th Anniversary Gala in St. Albert June 13.
