Collisions down over August long weekend, RCMP say

RCMP report the number of collisions in the province were down over the August long weekend when compared to the same period in 2014.

Police say there were 264 collisions this year, 40 fewer than in 2014. However, collisions involving at least one injury were up from 43 in 2014 to 45 in 2015. Both years saw three fatalities in the province.

Two of this year’s fatalities occurred in rural locations; the other occurred on a highway.

One of the fatalities involved a motorcycle and motorcycle injury collisions were up from 7 in 2014 to 12 in 2015.

Police made 5 arrests in relation tot he weekend;s 48 injury/fatality collisions.

The Alberta Association of Community Peace Officers also offered some data on provincial highway matters over the weekend.

Speeding tickets accounted for 652 of the nearly 1000 infractions issued. CPOs also issued nine distracted driving tickets, 19 intersection violations 20 seatbelt violations, and 16 tickets related to alcohol.

But not everyone got a slip of paper to pay later. The association reports the province’s CPOs issued 233 warnings.

RCMP have not yet released their traffic infraction stats from the weekend.
