Morinville Jets readying for another season

by Stephen Dafoe

The Morinville Jets will hit the ice for a series of seven training camp sessions between Aug. 28 and Sept. 10. The annual gathering of Jets and Jet hopefuls gives the club the opportunity to start the formation of a team that will take on rivals in the Capital Junior Hockey League’s 2015-2016 season.

Morinville Jets President Brent Melville is looking to create an even better team than the one that hit the ice last season. That season saw the Jets finish in 3rd place in the West Division. The Jets took the first round of playoffs in two games straight but were knocked out of the playoff season by the North Edmonton Red Wings.

“If we get the players back and some new ones that are possible, we could have a better season than last year,” Melville said, adding he is still awaiting full commitments from a few solid former Junior A players they are trying to recruit.

This year’s camp will start the weekend of Aug. 28 with an 8:30 to 10 p.m. session on Friday, a 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. slot on the Saturday, and a 2:30 to 4 p.m. slot on the Sunday. Would-be players will next skate on Sept. 1 and 3 from 9:45 to 11 p.m. and on Sept. 8 and 10 from 8:30 to 10 p.m. All skates are in Morinville.

Tournament to follow

The Jets, new and old, will get an opportunity to show their skills in a pre-season tournament Sept. 11 to 13 set for Morinville. That tournament will put the Jets up against the Leduc Riggers, Stony Plain Flyers and Edmonton Mustangs.
Games will run Sept. 11 at 6 and 8:15 p.m., Sept. 12 at 6:15 and 8:30 p.m. and Sept. 13 at 4:45 and 7 p.m.
