Local schools joining forces to participate in Annual Terry Fox Run

The 35th annual Terry Fox Run will take place in Morinville Sept. 16 and the Town of Morinville is partnering with local schools. Students from Morinville Public School, Georges H. Primeau and École Notre Dame school will begin their runs at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre, using the community’s trail system for the majority of their routes.

Morinville Public School students will run at 10 a.m. and Primeau and Notre Dame students will depart at 1:15. More than 800 students from the three schools are expected to participate in the event and post-run celebrations will take place at each of the schools.

The annual run was started in 1981 in honour of Fox’s Marathon of Hope. Today the event takes place in 32 countries and has raised almost $700 million for cancer research.

“We are pleased to join in this global initiative and to have all participants meet at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre for videos, motivation and inspiration prior to their run,” said Allen Jacobson, Community Development Coordinator, in a Sept. 10 release. “This year’s theme is ‘Working Together to Outrun Cancer’ and so bringing the different schools together for this run is extremely fitting.”

The Towns says both Morinville RCMP and Peace Officers will participate in the event along with Community Services staff.
