The Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation will hold their Break Free Gala Nov. 7 in support of victims of domestic violence. The event will take place at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre and run from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tickets for the formal dress (suit or dress) are $80 in advance or $100 at the door.

“We wanted to do another event in the community to continue raising awareness, especially with all the news articles lately. Three women in one week. That’s pretty huge. It’s just about raising awareness and raising more money for our safehouse,” said Foundation President Lynne Rosychuk.

Although the subject matter and cause are somber, the event is intended to be light. The Foundation is planning a gala that will include catering by Doug Adsit of the Green Bean, a Funny Money Casino, Las Vegas-style performers, a silent auction, and photos of attendees.

“This is a somber discussion to talk about, so we wanted to put a bit of a fun night to it so that we could draw out more people,” Rosychuk said. “We’d like to raise at least $20,000 for sure.” The money will go to their goal of creating a shelter in the area for victims of domestic abuse.

The gala is a formal event, but Rosychuk pointed out tuxedos and gowns are not required. Suits and dresses are the order of the evening.

“We’ll have a professional photographer there to take pictures of couples,” she said.
