The Week In Photos

Doubling the donations

Ken Skjersven of the Morinville Food Bank Society received a cheque for $10,000 from Scotiabank Morinville Branch Manager Joanne St. Laurent Friday afternoon. The cheque represents $5000 raised in the community over the Christmas season, and $5000 in matching dollars from Scotiabank. This is the second year Scotiabank has matched dollars raised up to $5000, and St. Laurent said it is something the bank will continue to do.

Ukranian Christmas at Aspen
Above: Aspen residents had an opportunity to have a taste of the Ukraine Thursday. The Recreation Department, who hosted the event, had the assistance of resident Vera Uchacz, who provided information on food and customs. Uchacz said the wheat stalks placed on a stand symbolize the unity of the generations of the family. Christmas Eve supper consists of 12 meatless dishes that symbolize the 12 Disciples of Christ. The supper is eaten by candle light. The meatless dishes are why some make cabbage rolls, cream mushroom. Kutya or kutia is a ritual food and an integral ingredient of the supper, as it is a wheat dish and wheat may have symbolized regeneration and life and unity of all living and deceased family and societal members. Uchacz still has her many cookbooks and still enjoys cooking. She said she could do it all day.
