Column: Joe Morinville

The news just seems to get stranger and stranger in a world that seems to get even more stranger and stranger. Here’s some of what we’ve been talking about this week.

Some laws just make sense:

Not often I agree with something they’re doing in Ontario, but I read the other week that they’re making drivers stop for pedestrians until they are on the sidewalk on the other side of the road. New law applies to people on bicycles too, and if you break this new law, you could wind up with up to $500 in fines and lose three points.

Police officer once told me that in Alberta you just have to wait until they’ve cleared your lane. He wasn’t from Morinville where they don’t even let you do that half the time.

Every time I cross the road trying to go to the bank, some idiot in a jacked-up truck with all them chromed pipes on the front bumper comes rushing up to speed me along. So I speed along because I am no match for a big truck.
At least here now they are taking points away for distracted driving. They might want to think about ticketing distracted pedestrians too. The way the distracted drivers drive, no one has a chance if no one is looking at anything but their stupid phones.

Getting overcharged:

A guy in England went to use his credit card, and it was maxed out. Apparently his seven-year-old kid spent $8,000 buying dinosaurs and stuff for an online Jurrasic World game on his dad’s computer. Now the dad got his money back, but his comment was that he was mad because according to him — “I’m 32 years old. Why would Apple think I would be spending thousands of pounds on buying dinosaurs and upgrading a game?” My first thought is this 32-year-old must not know too many 32-year-olds.

But it could have been worse. His kid could have taken a ride from Edmonton to St. Albert with Uber.

You know you live in a small town when…

The talk of the town last week was Lyle from Guardian Drugs not being behind the druggist’s counter anymore. People talked about it in the coffee shops and people talked about in on Facebook, wondering where he went. Boy, people sure liked his good service and gentle ways with folks. There’s a lot of people what come and go from different businesses over the years, and hardly a word gets said. It’s really rare to have a guy or a gal behind the counter where the only thing people have to say about them is good stuff.

American politics:

I don’t got a dog in the American political guff going on now, but I did see Donald Trump’s first commercial on an American news channel. He just reminds me of a cartoon character or one of those dumb characters they do on late night comedy shows. Anyway, this commercial seems to be about getting folks all worked up and fearful of Moslems and Mexicans.

Seems to me some conservatives tried that kind of approach in our last federal election. That didn’t go so well for them as I recall.

If he wins, I expect young Mr. Trudeau might offer to pay for a wall between Canada and the States.
