Morinville Jets grab point in mid-week game

by Morinville News Staff

The Morinville Jets picked up a point Wednesday night for their 5-4 overtime loss to the Edmonton Royals. The contest gives the Jets a 13-16-2 record as the season winds down to seven remaining games before playoffs.

The game started on a solid blade with Brandon Dubuc scoring an unassisted shorthanded goal three minutes into the game. With the Royals scoreless through the frame, the Jets skated into the second period with a 1-0 lead.

Though the Royals balanced the board early in the period, Craig Hills, assisted by Brett Dubuc and Lee Gadoury, brought the lead to 2-1 for the Jets with 1:24 left in the period.

The third period saw the Royals pocket two before the Jets would score again, a situation that brought the contest to 3-3 with less than four minutes left in the game. Things did not look good when the Royals shifted it to 4-3 with 55 seconds left on the clock, but with five seconds left to play, Lee Gadoury evened the score to 4-4 off an assist from Brandon Dubuc.

The Royals got their game-winning goal a minute and a half into overtime.

The Jets play the Spruce Grove Regals on the road Sunday night, and hit home ice Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 8:30 p.m. to play the Hawks.
