Lions fundraising to send Cadets to Vimy Ridge

by Lucie Roy

The Morinville Lions Club is going to sell Vesey’s Bulbs from now until May 1. The fundraiser is part of their contribution to support the 3061 (1 CER) Morinville Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corp’s program to send some cadets to France to attend the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge commemorative ceremonies in April of 2017.

The 11-day trip would take cadets through Rome, Vimy Region, and Paris. They would also have an opportunity to take in the history of Rome before visiting Ortona, the site of the bloodiest battle in the Canadian WW2 Italian Campaign, and an opportunity to honour the Canadian War heroes buried at the Casino War Cemetery.

“This is a life-changing experience as 20,000 Canadian youth will march to Vimy Ridge, France to participate in the 100th Anniversary Ceremonies,” said Lions member Deborah Robillard, who is heading the fundraiser for the club. “They will tour the trenches and tunnels of the battlefields as well as visit Beaumont Hamel Newfoundland Memorial where all the soldiers lost their lives in 15 minutes. All close to the same age as these cadets. They will learn the sacrifices those young soldiers made for the freedom we have today.”

The Vesey’s Bulbs Fundraising with Flowers Colour Brochures and order forms arrived last week, and Vesey’s will process the orders as soon as they arrive. Shipping will commence in mid-April when the bulbs arrive from Holland.
Brochures and order forms are currently at Taser Inc. (Toys and Small Engine Repair) located in the business park at 2-9802-90 Avenue, beside Technical Automotives.
