It’s lights out for Morinville this month

by Morinville News Staff

The Town of Morinville will be participating in Fortis Alberta’s Earth Hour Challenge again this year. The initiative takes place Mar. 19 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Earth Hour, an annual global environmental movement, is aimed at encouraging residential and businesses to conserve power.

To help entice communities to save on power consumption, Fortis offers $15,000 in grants: $7500 for first place, $5000 for second place, and $2500 for third place. The top three communities who have the highest energy savings compared to the same hour a week before are awarded the monies.

“This is an exciting and humbling opportunity for Morinville to help conserve power,” said Mayor Lisa Holmes in a Town release Wednesday. “The positive participation by residents can have a lasting impact on the future.”

A win for Morinville would go towards funding one of three projects the Town has identified: pedestrian activated solar crosswalk lights, solar lighting for the trail system, or an energy audit study.

  1. The street light in front of my house has been on for 24hours a day for the last month and a half. Hopefully someone turns that off.

    • Have you phoned Fortis? They have an app now where you can report a problem. Check with the Town page – they posted something about it a while ago.
