KidSport Alberta’s Elite Performance Grant application process has opened. Under the program, eligible athletes could receive $500 for training. The grant is sponsored by Encana and the Tara Sloan Memorial Foundation.

The KidSport Elite Performance Grant was created to provide financial assistance to Alberta athletes recognized at a provincial or national team level from low-income families.

Youth under the age of 18, who participate in a provincial or national team program, can be awarded up to $500 towards their training.

“Being the son of a single father, these funds helped me reach my athletic goals and maintain honours in school,” said Tyrell Leslie, past grant recipient, and member of the FC Academy U18 reserve team in a release Friday. “Through this amazing program, I’ve been able to pursue my soccer goals, and I hope it continues to help underprivileged kids reach their goals of playing sport.”

The Tara Sloan Memorial Scholarship Fund at The Calgary Foundation was created in memory of Tara Leigh Sloan, who passed away from a car accident on March 11, 2000. Sloan swam for the University of Calgary Swim Club for ten years and was a five-time Canadian breaststroke champion. She held the women’s 100-metre breaststroke national record in the short course pool. Sloan also won 17 international medals, representing Canada at the Pan American Games, World Championships, Pan Pacific Championships and competed in many World Cup Tours.
