A lack of snow didn’t stop a record number of teams gathering in Cardiff Park for the annual Snowpitch Tournament.
The day-long event was a fundraiser for Morinville Youth Basketball.

This year’s event took place over the Easter weekend to give players a fun time raising funds for the basketball program in the community.

“We had 16 teams, which is a full tournament,” said organizer Serge Froment, adding they have not yet calculated just how much money was raised from the Mar. 26 event.

Froment did say the funds will go towards special coaching and player clinics that will take place in Morinville in the year ahead, offering additional skills development for the successful basketball program.

Typically played in the snow, the unusual sporting event was a little messier this year due to the lack of snow.

“The snow part of the Snowpitch turned into mud pitch,” Froment said. “The winner was Down and Dirty, organized by Scott Mason. He and his team are the team that has been in our tournament the most consistently over the years.”
