Majority of school divisions meet LGBTQ policy deadline

The majority of the province’s school divisions have complied with Education Minister David Eggen’s November 2015 requirement to submit their policies to support safe and caring schools by the end of March.

As of Thursday morning, Alberta Education received policy submissions from 55 of the province’s 61 school divisions and anticipated receiving all but two by the end of the day.

Alberta’s Education Minister, David Eggen, commended school authorities for their work on the policies, noting he felt it fitting the Mar. 31 deadline coincided with International Transgender Day of Visibility.

“It has been inspiring to see so much support for LGBTQ students and staff,” Eggen said in a release Thursday. “We know that when kids are being bullied or are experiencing stress, their mental health suffers, and they don’t do as well in school. We know that much work remains in the months ahead to review these policies, and we will continue to support our school authorities every step of the way.”

A formal review of all submitted policies will begin in April.
