Spirit of the North on this week

by Morinville News Staff

The 2016 Spirit of the North began Apr. 30 and runs until May 7 at Desa School of Karate in St. Albert and Servus Place.

This year’s event puts guest instructors Grand Master Kiyohide Shinjo and his sons Kiyohito and Shuichi in front of students of Traditional Okinawan Karate.

Four Sturgeon area students took black belt testing Saturday, which was the kickoff to the weeklong event. Richard Mead tested for his 1st Degree Black Belt, and Marina Casavant, Rebecca Skyrpan, and Jordan Rooke tested for their 2nd Degree Black Belt.

Desa School of Karate, the host of the event, is celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. They have three locations in Sturgeon: Camilla School, Legal and Cardiff Hall. Together with Morinville’s Rooke School of Karate there are more than 100 Sturgeon County area students taking part in the week-long event.

Testing and sparring take place throughout the week, and Black Belt and coloured belt tournaments take place at Servus Place on Friday and Saturday.
