Tyler Edworthy and Brett Dudar have recently earned International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) American Nationals medals. Edworthy returned from the competition in Las Vegas with gold in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Open Weight Class and silver in Ultra-Heavyweight No-Gi Division. Dudar took the championship in his teen weight class.

Edworthy said the competition was heavy. “I ended up facing a team member from Las Vegas,” he said. “It was a really close match. I actually ended up winning by one advantage point, which is not even a full point.”

During his Ultra-Heavyweight competition, Edworthy met a tougher match. “I ended up meeting a real big guy in the No-Gi Division. I’m guessing he was 320 [pounds],” Edworthy said of his opponent. “He also won World No Gi last year. He’s someone I’ll have my eye on for sure.”

The double medal win is a solid accomplishment for an athlete just coming off a knee injury.
“This is the first one since then. It’s a little bit slower. It felt good to get back in and do some competing again,” Edworthy said, adding he also had the opportunity to do some coaching. “It turns into pretty long days.”

Edworthy previously took home a silver medal in Jiu-Jitsu from the World Masters Tournament hosted by the IBJJF in Las Vegas in 2015.

The local athlete will not be heading to that competition this year due to scheduling conflicts; however, he is contemplating a trip to European Worlds in Portugal in January or February of 2017.
