In their second win of the 2016-2017 North Central Hockey League season, the Morinville Senior AA Kings ascended to the NCHL throne with a 2-0-0 record and first place in the league.

After defeating Slave Lake 9-2 in their season opener, the Kings hit home ice Saturday night to face NCHL newcomers – the Eckville Eagles. In that outing, the Kings emerged with a 5-2 victory.

The Kings ended the first frame trailing the new club 1-0, but dominated the ice in the second period with a string of four goals, the only ones pocketed by either side. Those contributions from Cole Cavell, Kyle Harris, Jordan Pelletier, and Thomas Brennan were spread throughout the period. Though the Eagles came back with one early in the final frame to make it 4-2, Ashton Pietersma pocketed one from Cole Cavell late int he period to add icing to the Kings’ cake and give the club a 5-2 win.

Two games in and the Kings are off to a good start with 14 goals for and only four goals against. The Kings’ rookie Kyle Harris is in second place in league stats with six points earned in two games, right behind Bonnyville’s Dakota Mason with eight points in two outings.

The Kings play their next two games on the road: Oct. 15 against Daysland and Oct. 22 against Bonnyville. The club return to the Ray McDonald Oct. 29 to face Whitecourt.
