Brokop bringing Patsy Cline Project to Morinville

by Stephen Dafoe

Singer/songwriter Lisa Brokop has been performing for more than 20 years, much of that her original material. This weekend she brings the songs of music legend Patsy Cline to the stage of the Morinville Community Cultural Centre. Tickets are still available for the Nov. 5 dinner and show at $50 for adults and $40 for seniors and students. They can be purchased at the cultural centre during business hours.

After cutting several albums and winning several awards, Brokop decided it was the time in her career to do something different from the contemporary/commercial part of the music biz.
“I wanted to go back to my roots—sing the songs that were influential to me when I was getting started, and sing the songs that I love,” Brokop said.

Those songs included those of Patsy Cline, a woman who was one of the most successful performers of the 20th century, but whose career was cut short when she was killed in a plane crash at the age of 30. It is her legacy as one of the great vocalists that appealed to Brokop.
“She had a way of presenting a song with such raw emotion,” Brokop said. “She can make you believe that the lyric she is singing is really happening.

I think people are drawn to real things. She said it like it was and she invited you into her heart.”

Though the show is called The Patsy Cline Project, Brokop said the upcoming Morinville show is a mixed performance.

“I will be doing several of the Patsy classics as well as a few that I wrote specifically for the project,” she said. “I will also do a few songs from my past repertoire of recordings that hopefully some will recognize.”

Brokop said she feels honoured to perform Cline’s music.

“I love this music, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to present The Patsy Cline Project.”
Doors open Saturday night at 6 p.m. for cocktails. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The show will start at 7:30 p.m.

The show is sponsored by 840CFCW and Servus Credit Union.
