MCHS honours its achievers

Morinville Community High School (MCHS) held their 2015-2016 School Year Achievement Awards presentation at the Morinville Cultural Centre Nov. 2. A full audience of students, staff and family filled the hall.

Principal Don Hinks expressed the school’s gratitude to the award sponsors for their generous support of student service and success at the school. “This year we have presented 223 awards for a total of $18,450, and this does not include the Alexander Rutherford Scholarships,” Hinks said.

Awards were presented in Career & Technologies Studies (CTS), Fine Arts, Cultural & Religion, Canadian Mathematics Competition, and the Turner Goldsmith ‘Kaizen’ Award for Excellence in Writing. Additional awards were presented for Leadership, Service, Business Community, as well as Grade 9, 10 and 11 Academic and Achievement awards, Grade 9 to 12 Honours, and the Knights of Columbus Top Academic and General Honours.

Only Courses that are taken at MCHS and the MCHS iLearn Centre are eligible for the MCHS Awards program and MCHS Honours.

Michaela Siemens received the Outstanding Student Award, and the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) of Morinville MCHS Above and Beyond Service Award. Both were presented to Siemens by CWL member Sandee Blackburn.

The MCHS HOWLS Award, sponsored by Pezer Construction and Restorations, was presented on their behalf by Principal Don Hinks to Kali MacDonald.

Tyrell Deweert was MCHS’s 2016 nominee for the Schulich Leader Scholarship. The plaque will be displayed at the school in his honour. These prestigious scholarships were envisioned by businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich to support and encourage young minds to embrace the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Students must demonstrate academic excellence or outstanding community leadership and only one student from each high school across Canada is eligible to be nominated.

The MCHS HOWLS Award is presented a student who has “Walked the Talk” regarding the school positive behaviour plan. The student shows HOWLS- honour, ownership, welcoming, leadership and safety in all that they do at the school. The recipient receives a certificate of achievement and a $300 award. Principal Don Hinks on behalf of Pezer Construction presented the award to Kali MacDonald.

The MCHS Above and beyond Award sponsored by the Catholic Women’s League of Morinville was presented by CWL member Mrs. Sandee Blackburn to Michaela Siemens. Siemens also was the recipient of a Grade 12 Honour Award.

Steven Vansevenandt walked away with numerous awards. These included the National Canadian Mathematics Competition Awa Grade Ten Level Cayley Competition where he was in second place, the Grade 10 Academic and Achievement Renaissance Award and Personal Growth in Humanities Award for English 10-1, the Phil Whiting Memorial Award for Math 10 Common and Science 10, Grade 10 Honour Award and the Knights of Columbus Top Academic Honour Award for Grade 10.

The Premier’s Citizenship Award was presented to Rebecca Kerrison. This award is presented to a grade 12 student in recognition of their outstanding achievements in citizenship, leadership, community service and volunteer work. Kerrison was also the recipient of the MCHS Student Council Service Award and Grade 12 Honours Award.

Craig Seguin also walked away with numerous awards. Solange Bachand, Vice President of the Morinville Historical & Cultural Society presented the Historical and Cultural Society Scholarship to Craig Seguin. Seguin received the Grade 12 Honour Award and the Knights of Columbus Grade 12 Top General Honours Award, one of three to receive the English 30-2 award, Coaches’ Choice Award for male athlete and one of two to who received the Registered Apprenticeship Program Scholarship.

The Jonathan James Senger memorial Scholarship was presented to Kaymen Badry and Hannah Froment by Debbie Martin (Centre). This award has been created by his Mother, Debbie Martin who was a teacher at Notre Dame Elementary School from 1981-2010 and has close ties to the community.

Father Mario, Kelsi Christoffersen, and Knights of Columbus member Paul Froment. Froment presented Christoffersen with the Knights of Columbus Grade 9 Top Honours award. She was also the recipient of the Grade 9 Honours award, the Dr. Darren Romanowski Grade Nine Academic Award for Math 9, Science 9 and Language Arts 9. She achieved firs place in the Canadian Mathematics Competition Grade 9 Pascal Competition. She was the recipient of the Graham Crush Memorial Award Junior Level and the CTS Home Economics winner.

The Visual Arts Award was presented to Alyssa Ralph by Colleen Turner of J.M. Turner/Goldsmith Inc. Ralph also received the Art 30 Award.

Paula Collins, Vice President of the Morinville Community Gardens presented the Urban Agriculture Award to Quaid Coursaux. The Morinville Community Gardens “Urban Agriculture” Award is presented to a student was has taken Urban Agriculture and has demonstrated in interest in gardening or other agricultural activities, has the best attitude of a continuous learner and embraces the pursuit of a sustainable way of life. He also received the Peter Gibeault Lion Quest Award and Grade 10 Honours.

The Scharmann/ Palmer Award for Integrity in English was presented to Britney Crowley by Sheila Scharmann on behalf of the Fred Scharmann and Leslie Palmer families. Crowley was also a recipient of the English 30-2 Award.

The French Award for Grade 9 Immersion was presented to Haillee Reaume and for Grade 10-12 Immersion to Emma Wiwchar by Lorraine Blackburn of Servus Credit Union Morinville. Reaume also received the Grade 9 Music Award and Grade 9 Honour award. Wiwchar received Third Place in the Canadian Mathematics Grade 11 Fermat Competition and Grade 11 Honour award.

The Morinville Lions Club Bursary was presented to Chelsea Taylor by Club President Deborah Robillard. Taylor also received the Grade 12 Honour Award. Robillard also presented the Peter Gibeault Lion Quest Award to Teagan Anslow and Quaid Coursaux.
