Jets streak ends in close game

The Morinville Jets lost their first game in six outings Friday night, falling 5-4 to the Edmonton Royals, currently 14-3-0. Friday night’s home-ice loss brings the Jets to 9-4-4 and within a point of the North Edmonton Red Wings, currently sitting atop the CJHL’s West Division rankings.

The Jets were scoreless for the first 25 minutes of the game Friday, trailing 3-0 at the end of the first period, and four nothing until Lee Gadoury picked up one from Jorden Rooke and Tyler Hagel on a man advantage at 15:22 in the second. That goal spurred the momentum for the Jets to rocket another three; the third brought the game to a 4-4 tie with 54 seconds left on the clock.

But just when it looked like another game driven to overtime, the Royals pocketed one with 28 seconds left on the clock to end the game 5-4 in their favour.

With this week’s games bringing the Jets to the halfway marker in the 2016-2017 regular season, the Jets look to be in pretty good shape heading into the second half. The club is currently averaging 4.53 goals per game and giving up 3.24 per game. On the power play, the Jets have earned 15 and given up 11. Tyler Hagel continues to be the club’s top scorer, sitting second in the league overall with 39 points this season, one point behind Beaumont’s Douglas Morris.

The Jets play the Mustangs on the road Wednesday night, and the St. Albert Merchants Saturday night at home. Game time Saturday is 6 p.m.
