Kings topple Devon in shootout

The Morinville Kings earned their third consecutive win Saturday night with a 3-2 shootout victory over the visiting Devon Barons. Saturday night’s win brings the Kings to 6-2-0 this season and a third-place position half way through the season. Bonnyville and Devon are tied for first place with 15 points and are three points and a game ahead of the Kings.
Saturday night’s game was a lock throughout 60 minutes.

Neither Morinville nor Devon was able to score in the opening frame.

Morinville trailed 1-0 for much of the second period until Ashton Pietersma tied it up at 48 seconds with an assist from Cole Cavell.

Though the third period was mostly a scoreless effort, the Kings built a 2-1 lead with 4:16 left, Locke Muller, assisted by Jamie Johnson and Lyndin Lewis, giving the Kings hope for a victory during regular play. But the Barons answered back with 3:44 left to push the game to overtime.

The game was decided in a shootout, pushed to the fourth shooter – Gerald Desjarlais, who brought the win home for the Kings.

Half way through the 2016-2017 North Central Hockey League season, the Kings have scored 49 goals and given up only 36, averaging 6.125 goals per game while giving up 4.5.
The King’s Kyle Harris sits in second spot for league leaders with 15 points.

The Kings play Daysland Friday night at home at 8:30 p.m. and take to the road Saturday to face the Edson Ice.
