New grants to advance women’s equality and prosperity

Organizations that improve the lives of women and girls will receive $500,000 in grants from Alberta Status of Women; the government announced Wednesday.

The province says the grants create opportunities for community groups to pilot innovative ideas or expand existing successful projects that help women in Alberta reach their full potential.

The grant program is open to registered charities, registered not-for-profits, and community-based coalitions and networks.

“When women succeed, whole communities and economies succeed. That’s why we are investing in ideas that support Alberta women,” said Stephanie McLean, Minister of Status of Women, in a release Wednesday.

Projects must focus on one of several areas, including helping women secure good jobs and closing the wage gap, preventing and responding to violence against women and girls, or encouraging women to run for elected office or apply for boards and senior leadership roles

Up to $50,000 is available for eligible organizations looking to organize conferences, training sessions, and events. Up to $10,000 is available for groups wanting to build capacity by attending conferences or create mentorship relationships. Expand a successful initiative to other parts of the province could result in up to $100,000 in grant funding.

Marcela Mandeville, CEO of Alberta Women Entrepreneurs, was pleased with the government’s grant announcement.

““We believe our communities are strongest when women are full participants in entrepreneurship,” Mandeville said. “We are excited to see this support for organizations that engage and support women in our province.”

Deadline for submissions is 11:59 p.m. Dec. 16. For more information visit http://swgrants.alberta.ca/
