The Morinville Fire Department hosted the 19th Annual Sturgeon County Firefighter Olympics Aug. 12. The day-long event drew in teams from Morinville, Legal, Gibbons, Bon Accord, Calahoo and Namao for a day of competition. The event ran from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. behind the Ray McDonald Sports Center.

Each municipality’s firefighter team included five members competing in activities with themes related to the job. Each team competed in the hopes of becoming the 2017 Olympic Champions.

Events included a blindfolded obstacle course, carrying a rescue mannequin through a series of challenging obstacles, and bowling with rolled up fire hoses.

“These types of activities give a chance for the town and county departments to get together outside of an emergency situation as we do work together as mutual aid partners,” said Morinville Fire Chief Brad Boddez earlier in the week prior to the event. “It is nice to build those relationships through fun activities and team-building exercises.”

Each year the County’s Firefighter Olympics are hosted by a different municipality within Sturgeon County.

This year’s winner was Morinville.

“It was a close race but Morinville won it again,” Morinville Fire Chief Brad Boddez said. “We were defending champs coming into today and we came through again and won 2017.”
