Jacob Middlekamp is one more candidate to throw his hat in to run for Councillor of Division 5 in Sturgeon County.

Middlekamp has lived in Sturgeon County for 20, having moved from the Netherlands in 1997. He has a farm 6 kilometres north of Gibbons and has a quail and duck operation.

He made the decision to run again for Councillor of Division 5; he previously ran in 2013.

“I think I can add a lot with the experience I have had in the past, with Board and community experience and with the volunteer work that I did.”

Middlekamp spoke of his problem-solving attributes, including his passion, enthusiasm and background as well as a wealth of experience in strategic planning and that he likes challenges.

“I like to make a difference for the good of the taxpayers. I think I can make a difference. I can make difficult decisions when necessary. [I] learned in the past that you have to look at the big picture and that is what the taxpayer deserves. I can listen quite well and make good decisions even when it is difficult, decisions that are not good for myself but for the greater group, for everybody.”

Middlecamp said he is running because there are some issues with the roads. “I know that the Council and Mayor are working on that. I think there can be lots of improvement. I also like to have that the taxes stay low – low as possible and that we do not get too high an increase.”

Middlekamp said he would like to ensure that revenue from the industry – the Heartland, from the North West Upgrader refinery gets divided and goes to the right places especially to the communities and for roads.

In the January, 2017 Council Appointments Middlekamp joined the Sturgeon County Agricultural Service Board and serves as Chair. He also serves on the Economic Development Board and was appointed to the Council Committee in the Public Board Appointments to the Community Services Advisory Board for Division 5.

Middlekamp said he has also volunteered 15 years on the Redwater Fire Department and as Fire Chief for one and half years.

He became involved with the Alberta Chicken Producer and served as a board director from 2000 to 2006 and also chairing the Food Safety Committee and Chair of the Canadian Poultry Research Council.

In 2005-2006 he was involved with the Chicken Farmers of Canada and involved at the National level.
