The Town of Morinville announced Thursday morning that effective with the first day of school, 100 Street between 101 Avenue and 105 Avenue would be designated a school zone. The Town says before the start of school, necessary signage will be posted to allow for motorists to observe this change.
The Town cites the growing demands and recent changes to Morinville Public School as the reason for establishing a school zone at the location. More and more modulars have been added tot he property ahead of the construction of a 5-9 Public middle school on Grandin.
The Town said Thursday that after receiving concerns from the school and public, the matter was put over to the Traffic Advisory Committee (TAC). That committee reviewed the site using Alberta Transportation School Zone Guidelines and determined the area should be a school zone.
“This new school zone is a success for the children of this community,” said Sgt. Dale Kendall, Morinville RCMP. “Their safety is paramount, and this is a positive step in the right direction.”
With school starting soon, the Town and Morinville RCMP remind drivers to slow down, play close attention (especially around crosswalks) and to not pass school buses when lights are flashing.
