Community invited to try disc golf in Morinville

by Morinville News Staff

While many people have played nine or 18 holes around Morinville, residents will now be able to play nine holes within Morinville – as long as they bring a frisbee.

Morinville Community Services is introducing the sport of disc golf to Morinville residents with the launch of the first disc golf course at Montreux Park (located north of the Morinville Community High School).

“Disc golf has been growing into a mainstream sport in Alberta because of its ease of play and learn,” said Morinville’s Sport and Recreation Coordinator Tyler Edworthy in a news release Wednesday. “Disc Golf is much like traditional golf; however, instead of clubs and a ball, players use a flying disc as they try [to] complete each hole (or in this case basket) in the fewest number of throws from the formatted tee area.”

Edworthy said disc golf can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities and will be provided to residents as a spontaneous use facility.

The Town will launch the program Wednesday, Sept. 27 from 5 p.m. – to 7:30 p.m. at Montreux Park (94 Street and 101 Avenue).

Members of the Edmonton Disc Golf Association will help with the launch, explaining the rules of the game, providing demonstrations, trials, and prizes.

The Nature Kids will also be at the event. They are looking for supporters to help them plant roughly 75 trees in the park to help in defining the fairways.
